Westphalian Champion Stallion and price highlight So Magic (So Perfect x Dream Boy)

The Perfect Dream Boy?

The Nr. 49 So Perfect x Dream Boy x Sir Donnerhall was on our original First Looks list for Westphalia and he certainly fit the brief for a potential licensing champion: super attractive in the type with a dark coat, harmoniously built, solid enough in the gaits, and the pedigree piqued interest. Sire So Perfect (Sezuan x Sir Donnerhall) has scores to 73+% at S*** level and looks like a promising Grand Prix hopeful for Swedish Olympian Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfvén after selling to Lövsta Stuteri this Summer. The dam is a full sister to none other than Dynamic Dream (Dream Boy x Sir Donnerhall), a former Westphalian Licensing Champion himself in 2019 (before a positive doping test invalidated both the champion title and his licensed status — he was later relicensed).

So Perfect (Sezuan x Sir Donnerhall), Reserve Licensing Champion in Vechta 2019

So Perfect was actually gelded earlier this year, but his sons have been having a positive licensing season with two getting the nod of approval for Oldenburg (one Premium) and another for Hanoverian. We first saw So Perfect in Vechta back in 2019 when he was Reserve Licensing Champion for Oldenburg. I remember he was quite imposing with a big-ring look (large-framed), ample stallion expression, and lots of quality and power in the movement. He stood out.

So, good looks? Check. Above average in conformation and movement? Check. A pedigree that will be marketable? Check. But, it must be said here that other horses easily outclassed this one on the lunge while also checking these boxes adequately enough (and also not having Sir Donnerhall twice in the 3rd generation). I am curious to see how his future unfolds as he now goes to the well-regarded performance and breeding station Klosterhof Medingen (and not Helgstrand as everyone anticipated!) after selling to a French-based client for the price highlight of 500k euro. He has been given the name So Magic ("So Dynamic" would have been my vote).

Dynamic Dream Reserve

I haven't included any Dynamic Dream sons on my highlights list for the 3 main German licensings (Oldenburg, Hanoverian, Westphalian). Maybe I am a bit influenced by the general rumblings re: Dynamic Dream, but I can also admit that as a rule of thumb they are more convincing at the actual licensings than in the preselection videos. As well, they are almost always rockstars on the lunge. The Nr. 12 Dynamic Dream x Benicio x De Niro was in my opinion easily the most complete of the Dynamic Dream sons in Westphalia and I had him on my favorites list after the hard ground and lunging. Perhaps the front leg could have more scope, and the walk is limited, but he was always well-balanced on his feet and the movement was consistent (in hand, moving free, and on the lunge). He sold for 300k euro and will stand next season at Hengststation Pape.

Where is Extra Gold?

Since being named Champion of the 2021 Westphalian Licensing, the Weihegold grandson Extra Gold (Escolar x Apache x Don Schufro) has gone relatively quiet other than being high scorer of the shortened suitability test in Warendorf back in 2022 (and maybe some riding horse tests?). He now stands at Holkenbrink. Here in Münster-Handorf he presented two licensed sons, with Nr. 22 from a Charmeur x Dream of Glory dam named as Premium and one of two Second Reserve Champions. For me, this was easily the best horse on the lunge and he also really stood out on hardground.

This colt originally sold for 12k euro under the name Einstein in a July 2023 foal auction. He now goes to Helgstrand after selling for the second highest hammer price of 415k euro and will carry the name Excuse Me(?). His dam has already produced the M level successful Fürst Filou M (by Fürsten-Look) and also from this damline comes the Vice Bundeschampion Birkhof's Elocin (by Escamillo).

Dream Producing Debby

From the beginning, I gravitated towards Nr. 31 Follow Him x De Kooning x Weltmeyer, and I stayed impressed during every phase of the licensing by this very interesting young stallion. He is a bit of a geek in type, sure, but he moved in such a dynamic, uphill way that I am still trying to wrap my head around. Especially on the lunge he stood out in the canter, and the way he was able to articulate through the shoulder was otherworldly. I think some may knock the hind leg as being too "out," but there were moments where he could really carry weight and engage the hind leg under the body. I loved him. He sold to Helgstrand for 350k and it looks like he will go by the name Follower.

The dam Debby is also the mother of the approved stallion Selectric as well as Madeleine Witte-Vrees' ride Elton from this year's Rotterdam CDIO5* Nations Cup. A full sister of Debby also produced this year's Bundeschampion of the Four-Year-Old Mares and Geldings, London Eye (by La Vie).

Escanto PS

The oldest Escamillo sons (i.e. Escanto PS, Escaneno, Extreme U.S.) all debuted their first crop of licensing candidates this year, and I have been wondering which one would come out "on top." I would say the jury is still out, but I will make a note here that Escanto is the first to have any sons named Premium. Here for Westphalian the Premium stallion Élisée (Escanto PS x Top Gear x Vitalis) gave a convincing and consistent impression during every licensing phase. He sold to Celle for 76k euro. Escanto also had two Premium sons at the Mecklenburg Licensing last week.

We have an Escanto daughter growing up in Europe also from this first foal crop - the attractive Wildrose out of a Licotus x Rubinstein x Barsoi xx mother. She is from the famous Oldenburg damline of Weissena (i.e. Weihegold OLD, Viva Gold OLD, Total Hope OLD) and will be 3 in May.

Further Premiums

Hengststation Beckmann's Fanegro (Blue Hors Farrell x Negro x Dimaggio) is another that is presenting his first year of stallion sons. He had four in Westphalian, only one was licensed but it was the very convincing Nr. 25 out of a Dancier x Gribaldi dam. This one had a lot of stallion presence and looked like a sporthorse - he was Premium. He comes from a good damline for performance and sold locally for 85k euro. In general, all of the Fanegros looked to be made well and were well balanced, but they all held some tension over the topline.

Nr. 34 For Romance x Don Frederico x Rubin-Royal was included on our First Looks list and he still presented very good qualities during the licensing, Premium. He always moved with a lot of elasticity and power, the canter was top notch. The rhythm of the walk concerns me, but regardless he comes from a strong sport damline: the grandmother is a half-sister to the international Grand Prix horses Dresden Mann and Dynastie. He was taller than I originally thought (174cm) and was not for sale.

All of the Vitalis sons were licensed, and the most complete was easily the quite mature looking Nr. 61 from a Fürstenball x Samarant dam. He always moved in a natural uphill tendency and left a very confident impression. His mother is a half-sister to the dam of Premium stallion Fürst Samarant who is also now confirmed to PSG/I1. He sold for 70k euro locally.

Other Mentions

Nr. 9 Diamantenglanz x Fiorano x Weltmeyer was a standout for me. Perhaps he could have been bigger-framed and had longer lines, but he was like an elastic rubberball off of the ground with a hind leg that really articulated. He commanded a higher price than some of the Premium stallions, selling for 142k euro. He is from the same damline of Isabell Werth's Olympic horse Gigolo FRH.

At least three stallions found new owners in the US: Nr. 57 Vision x Benicio x Fürst Wilhelm, Nr. 16 Escaneno x St. Schufro x Belissimo M, and Nr. 39 Grand Galaxy Win x Hotline x Astrix.
